Mikhail Baryshnikov: artist’s biography


Artist Mikhail Baryshnikov1948
Born: Riga, Latvia

1969
Graduated at the Vaganova Choreographic School, graduating from student to principal dancer of the Kirov Ballet

1974
Moved to USA

1980
He began a 10-year tenure as Artistic Director of American Ballet Theatre, nurturing a new generation of dancers and choreographers.

1985
The artist first began exploring photography in the mid 1980’s and for two decades Baryshnikov has documented his travels, friends, family and surroundings while studiously expanding his knowledge of the camera.

1990
From 1990 to 2002, Mr. Baryshnikov was director and dancer with the White
Oak Dance Project, which he co-founded with choreographer Mark Morris

2005
Opened the Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC)

2010
He was given the rank of Officer of the French Legion of Honor

2012
He was awarded the Vilcek Prize
