Helidon Xhixha unveils new work in Venice
Helidon Xhixha has unveiled a new sculpture titled Luce sulla Laguna (Light on the Lagoon) in collaboration with ContiniArtUK and Bugno Fine Art. Xhixha’s Luce sulla Laguna will be displayed in Venice for the duration of the upcoming 2017 Venice Biennale which will take place from May 13th – November 26th, 2017.
The artwork, which stands over two meters tall, was created using the artists preferred medium of choice, mirror-polished stainless steel, and is situated in between the distinctive red and white mooring poles outside of the prestigious Centurion Palace Hotel in Venice.
The Centurion is a 19th Century neo-Gothic Hotel positioned in-between the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute on Venice’s Canal Grande. Luce sulla Laguna can be observed across the Canal from The Gritti Palace, or from a boat between the docks of Salute and Santa Maria del Giglio.
Previously in 2015, Xhixha received worldwide recognition with his monumental sculpture Iceberg which floated through the canals of Venice. The four meter wide sculpture was presented as part of the 56th Venice Biennale to emphasize the exploitation of the earth’s natural resources. The floating of the sculpture became an iconic moment of the 2015 Biennale, garnering both public and media attention. Both Iceberg and Luce sulla Laguna emanate the notion of energetic movement as light continually reflects from their polished steel surfaces.
The artist’s upcoming solo exhibition “In Ordine Sparso” is set within the magnificent surroundings of the Boboli Garden in Florence and offers a new perspective on the complex relationship between Chaos and Order. The exhibition will be running from the 27th of June 2017 to the 29th of October 2017.
